FROM VISION TO VENTURE: THE
STORY OF OCKENDEN INTERNATIONAL
In the aftermath of the Second
World War, hundreds of thousands of displaced people from across Europe
were stranded in camps, with little hope for the future. Horrified by this
prospect, three Woking schoolteachers decided to make a difference….
Thanks to a generous Heritage Lottery
Fund grant to Surrey Heritage, the archives of refugee charity Ockenden
International have now been preserved, catalogued and are accessible to
all. For over half a century, from its headquarters in Woking, the charity
provided shelter, training, education and hope for thousands of refugees
across the globe. Its extraordinary story is of enduring significance
because it reveals how ordinary people made a difference and changed lives
around the world.
The records
The records give a comprehensive
overview of the reception of refugees into the United Kingdom from the
1950s to the 1990s. Ockenden's overseas projects in South East Asia, the
Middle East and Northern Africa are documented and the collection includes
papers relating to individual refugees and their families.
The exhibition
A small travelling exhibition of
the project is available free of charge and can be sent to venues on request
for a specified period. It comprises 6 colourful lightweight Velcro-backed
panels each measuring 640mm x 740mm. There is an optional accompanying
DVD, 8mins in length, featuring a compilation of archive film footage telling
the inspiring story of Ockenden.
The leaflet
A colourful leaflet giving details
of the project and using the collection is available on request.
