Senior Research Biostatistician-Based in Malawi (020)
Working for the prestigious Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Clinical Research Programme
Closing Date for completed applications: Friday 13th August, 2010 at 1700 hours; BST:

Appointment may be at Senior Lecturer, Reader or Professor
(Salary is expected to be in the region of £39,000 - £60,000 depending on category of appointment and subject to discussion prior to appointment. Contribution to relocation may be available).

This is a Full-time, Fixed-term appointment with funding guaranteed for 5 years.

This Senior Research Biostatistician position results from a new initiative by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). This will be an LSTM appointment, supported by the Wellcome Trust, to establish a unified data repository and biostatistical research team at the University of Malawi, College of Medicine.

You will lead the unification of Statistics services across the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Trust (MLW) and Karonga Prevention Study (KPS), utilising a strong team of Statisticians, Database Managers and Data Officers. An ability to develop relationships on a national and international platform will be required as you capitalize on strong links with statistical expertise at LSTM and LSHTM to foster collaborative research links with other academic institutions.

The successful candidate will be able to evidence in-depth experience of statistical research methods, as well as provide evidence of operating in a health-related research environment. Experience of both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is essential to the role, as is a record of publishing original research in peer-reviewed journals.

You will be expected to act as an independent statistician on data monitoring committees, trial steering committees, funding boards and other advisory groups, as well as providing statistical support to research and teaching activities across MLW and KPS.

A postgraduate degree in statistics is a minimum requirement of the role, with project management and practical experience of developing and running clinical trials advantageous. With the responsibility of providing academic leadership across research activities, experience of developing an organisation’s research strategies would also be beneficial, but is not essential.
