Post-Doctoral Research Assistant: Computational Bioscience/Bioinformatics

Grade 7: Salary £28,983 - £35,646 p.a. (with a discretionary range to £38,951)

We are recruiting a scientist to join the analytical team for a vigorous and growing research programme that brings together clinical, statistical and laboratory expertise to address important problems in UK infectious diseases and public health. The UKCRC Consortium 'Modernising Medical Microbiology' (www.modmedmicro.ac.uk) is a collaboration of unprecedented scale between Oxford University, the Health Protection Agency, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the NHS that aims to revolutionise approaches to tracing and tracking clinically important micro-organisms in near-to-real-time, using modern sequencing technologies to better understand the biology and epidemiology of C. difficile, Norovirus, S. aureus and M. tuberculosis. We are looking for someone who will enjoy working in a vibrant inter-disciplinary environment amongst clinicians, biologists and epidemiologists. As a bioinformatician on this project, you will have strong programming and/or scripting skills, with a background in biological sequence analysis, genomics or a similarly relevant area. You will be responsible for developing and implementing methods to assemble and analyse next-generation sequence data, and related problems in large-scale data analysis. You will also play a role in developing analytical tools for translation to clinical practice. This is a prime opportunity for someone with established skills to gain experience with next-generation sequencing data.
