Senior Post Doctoral Research Assistant in Network Inference

Applications are invited for a Senior Postdoctoral Research Assistant to investigate methods for inferring networks from multivariate time series. We have the specific goal of inferring networks that evolve in time. It is intended that the PDRA will investigate some of the existing canon of static and dynamic inference approaches and attempt to develop new ones. As well as having real valued measurements of the system at each time point, scientific observation often gives us extra categorical observations: meta-data which associates meaningful (symbolic) tags to the state of the system at that time. We will be investigating ways of combining this metadata with the inferred networks, with a view to detecting anomalous system behaviour and improving forecasting.

As part of the EPSRC grant Global View the candidate will consider applications of network inference to heterogeneous types of time series, will be involved in data collection relating to the state of the UK, and will be involved in meetings with the Treasury and Department of Transport.

Applicants should possess a PhD or equivalent (or be about to receive one) and must have familiarity with methods to infer networks from sets of time series or related methods in multivariate time series analysis.

It will be desirable for candidates, depending on background, to have some subset of the following skills. Familiarity with methods from: network analysis and complex systems; statistical physics and stochastic processes; signal processing/ time series analysis; statistical machine learning especially familiarity with graphical models and Gaussian processes.

Since this appointment is interdisciplinary we will consider candidates from across the disciplines: statistics, systems biology, computer science, applied mathematics, physics, engineering and econometrics.

The post is available initially for a fixed-term duration of 1 year. The appointment will be at the start of Grade 8 (£36,715). If no suitable applicant is forthcoming an appointment on the Grade 7 scale 28,983 - 35,646 (with an appropriate adjustment of duties) may be considered.
