We are looking for 6 PhD students to work in areas of probabilistic modelling and computing. We are looking for good graduate students (1st / 2/1), typically from Maths, Statistics or Computing (with a strong mathematical element).  Further details can be found at:

Summary:

*EPSRC Industrial CASE PhD Studentship x 4, EPSRC studentship x 1, EU studentship x 1*

Applications are invited for six PhD studentships to be undertaken within the Computer Science and Mathematics groups at Aston University, supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the European Commission (EC).

   1. Improving winter road maintenance combining sensor networks, probabilistic modelling and optimisation. (CASE, Amey Ltd, 3.5 years)
   2. Quality assurance of observational data: A Bayesian data assimilation approach. (CASE, Met Office, 3.5 years)
   3. Diagnostics and inference for helicopter airframe vibration data. (CASE, AgustaWestland? Ltd, 3.5 years)
   4. Computational models of reasoning with uncertainty that capture clinicians' judgements of mental-health risks (CASE, Humber Mental Health Trust, 3 years)
   5. Visualisation of Quality Information for Geospatial and Remote Sensing Data (EC, 3 years)
   6. Cloud Computing for Large-Scale Complex IT Systems (EPSRC, 3 years)

Each position is available to start around 1 October 2010 (date negotiable)

*Financial Support*

For the CASE studentships: will be provided to Home/EU students (subject to eligibility) at the standard EPSRC rate of £13,290 with the corresponding standard EPSRC increases in subsequent years, plus a £3,000 per year supplementary award from the collaborating company.

For the EPSRC and EC-funded studentships: will be provided to Home/EU students (subject to eligibility) at the standard EPSRC rate of £13,290 with the corresponding standard EPSRC increases in subsequent years.

*Person Specification*

Successful applicants should have a first class or upper second class honours degree or equivalent qualification. Preferred requirements include appropriate computing or mathematical skills.

For the EPSRC / CASE awards, applicants should fulfil the eligibility criteria for EPSRC funding through UK nationality and/or residency status (see http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/PostgraduateTraining/StudentEligibility.htm).

For the EU studentship, applicants should be eligible for Home fees status, but need not have UK nationality or residency status.
