Subject: Use of Biological samples in research.

Every year or so someone asks a question about use of samples for research purposes.

Well, I have just received this email and looks like NPSA and NRES are getting their act together by arranging this meeting which should answer most people's questions.

So, anyone interested in this subject should register to find out exactly what the current regulations allow you to do.

I have the original email with attachments (but you can get these from the link shown, so if you are having problems, I can forward it to you.

Dear All

A one-day training workshop entitled Ethical Principles Relating to Consent for Use of Samples and Related Data in Research will be held in Bristol at the Future Inn Cabot Circus Hotel, Bond Street South, BS1 3EN on Tuesday 2nd November 2010.

This workshop is part of a national series and has been developed as a collaboration between onCore UK, a national biobanking organisation, and the National Research Ethics Service (NRES) in association with the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) and the National Information Governance Board for Health and Social Care (NIGB).

The workshop aims to provide information that will clarify the ethical principles relating to when consent is or is not required for use of anonymised biological samples in research and is aimed at a broad research audience including Researchers, R&D officers/managers and REC Members and Co-ordinators..

Topics to be covered include:

• the framework for use of human tissue in research

The programme is attached and further details regarding registration can be found at http://events.npsa.nhs.uk/nres/380
Please note there is no cost for this workshop and registration is on a first-come-first-served basis, so please book early to avoid disappointment.
Please forward this email to anyone you feel would be interested – an A4 poster advertising the event is also attached for use on your noticeboard.

Please contact onCore UK or NRES for more details on either of these workshops.
