BD Urine Collection Device
Angela

Our Department/Trust locally evaluated these but didn't proceed. We were concerned about the health and safety risk as well a potential litigation area from harm due to the needle albeit with a sheath around it. Until this is resolved we felt it would be difficult to change practices.

Steve

Subject: BD Urine Collection Device

I'm sure we're not alone in being swamped with random urine samples which have to be transfered into appropriate tubes for automated analysis. We were very keen to look at using the BD urine collection cup with integrated transfer device. However, we have run into a problem with the GP practices chosen to pilot the device. The transfer device consists of a lid with built in needle to allow the urine to be transfered into a vacutainer in the same way that the blood taking device works. The question is what other users do to dispose of the device. Do patients dispose of the device at home ( a potential safety issue as there is a needle involved, albeit small and sheathed)? Do patients return the entire device (with urine content) to the practices for disposal, where the practice then feels the need to empty the device and dispose of the needle bearing lid separately? Do the patients empty the collection cup and dispose of that, returning just the lid to the practice for safe disposal? Does the collection cup come back to the lab, where the transfer into the vacutainer takes place followed by disposal?  We would be very interested to hear of your solution to the concerns raised by our practices.

Thanks

Angela
