Cheers for all your feedback Simon, and again to everyone else.
I think a ‘hot topic’ would be a bit of a
understatement!!
In regards to ‘official’ system, I don’t agree
or disagree. As well as being the colleges blackboard administrator, I also
work at one of our Flexible learning centres, I find that students usually need
or ask for some kind of system guidelines. Even good users like to know that
they are not going off on a tangent and decent structure would ensure that they
are meeting all the requirements and so forth. Even pointers - good
points / bad points, what to look for, a system recommendation might help.
Many thanks
Ty

OK, but what about allowing the
learner to use whatever tools are desired or familiar?
Sure, you can dictate that a particular portfolio system is used, but that is
likely to set the tone of use of that system as strictly "official",
so that learners are less likely to use such a system for personal reflections
that they might not necessarily want to share openly with the institution. The
use of e-portfolio tools for reflection and personal development, while perhaps
not being core to VLE thinking, is core to much e-portfolio thinking.

Hi All,
Seems as though Matt's email has caused a bit of a misunderstanding.
From what I read of it the suggestion is that the institution owns and
runs the e-portfolio system, and has ownership of the student's
documents. At the same time as this the e-portfolio is designed to
allow the student to 'embed' (which is simply a more accessible version
of a hyperlink) their work into other systems such as Facebook. The
work would never reside on anyone else's system, and only the student
would be able to create the embed code for their portfolio.
The suggestion seems to be that one of the requirements of e-portfolios
should be the ability to easily link with whatever other system ANY of
the stakeholders deem necessary. So the university may want to link it
to Sharepoint or Moodle, but a student may want to link it to Facebook
or LinkedIn.
Hope that makes sense
