INTRODUCTION:

 We would be pleased to receive submissions for a Special Edition of the International Journal of Sociotechnology and Knowledge Development on the topic of organizational culture and the management of knowledge.

We know that an organizational culture affects understood values and beliefs and the development of trust within that organization. We also know that knowledge sharing may be affected by the organizational type such as SME or large multi-national or the sector within which that organization operates. Not-for-profit organizations have different cultures from many for-profit organizations and this difference in culture also affects the culture of knowledge sharing and how knowledge may be managed. Sector or organizational form may impact on whether or not knowledge is managed for targets or whether or not knowledge developed through Communities of Practice, for instance, is used to assist in developing strategy.

OBJECTIVE OF THE SPECIAL ISSUE:

 The International Journal of Sociotechnology and Knowledge Development is especially interested in studies that consider the sociotechnical aspects of this knowledge development or knowledge sharing. We will be interested in any paper that broadly covers this topic. In particular, we would like to hear from authors who have developed successful knowledge sharing systems that incorporate but are not driven by technology. We would also like to hear from authors who have developed less successful implementations and for their explanations as to why systems have failed so as to encourage learning in this sector. In addition, a possible idea for contributing would be to look at differing organizational cultures according to national host country: Does or can technology influence sharing across cultures?

RECOMMENDED TOPICS:

Topics to be discussed in this special issue include (but are not limited to) the following where culture and knowledge management are key:

Managing organizational knowledge as a strategic asset;

Using knowledge management principles to solve organizational performance problems

Learning organizations;

Humanistic redesign and technological politics in organizations

Ethical issues for the researcher and practitioner;

Whilst the above are some indications of what might be included in this Special Edition, it is not exclusive and the Editors would be pleased to hear from potential contributors as to their suggestions of potential papers.

We are interested in papers from all over the world that are both conceptually and empirically based. In terms of conceptual papers and theoretical frameworks, we seek to contribute to theory building by both re-applying existing frameworks and developing new constructs that help explaining socio-technological knowledge development and the impact of organizational culture on this.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE:

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit papers for this special theme issue on  “Organizational Culture and the Management of Knowledge: a Sociotechnical Approach”  on or before  September 1, 2010 . All submissions must be original and may not be under review by another publication.
