I was maybe looking at the practical answer rather than the supportive.

As she is a psychologist I was wondering whether her clinical supervisor may be able to help. It sounds as if, like you say, she is having an understandable wobble and is getting distressed and some increased clinical supervision during this difficult time might be the best way to support her.

Sharon,
I am sorry I was not more helpful. If you haven't had better advice/comment from list I can only suggest that this is raised at the earliest opportunity with the court process (which she has already done) and with the GP who will ultimately be the treating doctor or the obstetrician/Consultant midwife.

Your last sentence is the one I started with actually - how will you know what you will feel like 2/3/4/6/8/ weeks post partum? I think that its a high profile case and she is pancking. Since I posted original mail the situation has shifted - I have been tactful and more or less said that its between her and the court, her evidence may be crucial and she needs to think very hard about the likely outcome of NOT attending . and its not an OH issue but even I succomb to doing things not in my remit when faced with a very pregnant distraught woman......

Hello Sharon,

I have not come across this one before (ie mat leave) but I am sure some of my colleagues across the police services have.

However we regularly have officers who are off sick that feel they cannot attend court to give evidence due their ill health. In these situations the process does not involve OH at all though they often think it does. The process is (legally stated I believe) that they have to get a letter from their GP stating that they are unfit to attend court. The Judge then decides whether to accept this or challenge (which they are known to do when the their participation is crucial or could affect the huge logistics in bringing a case to court).

There are the obvious ones e.g. where an officer may be hospitalised following a major illness/injury and then we have the psychological one's that can be complicated and seem more open to challenge by the judge.

I am not sure where your colleague would fit in, I suppose it would depend on when she delivers, the type of delivery, any psychological or physical impact due to or following birth etc.. Unfortunately she nor her GP is going to know this until or after the birth.

I hope this helps at least a little

Interesting conundrem - not convinced that this is strictly an OH issue but maybe colleagues in the police can help.
Obviously working within the criminal justice system some of our staff are expected to attend various legal proceedings. I have a pregnant psychologist who has been told that she is expected to give evidence at a trial a few weeks after her EDD. The trial is the Crown V the individual therefore a criminal proceeding, our employee is expected to give evidence re parole reports that she had done with regards to the accused while he was incarcerated
Her question - if it wasnt  for her work she wouldnt be expected to attend, she will be on maternity leave, however they are criminal proceedings . She has been told the police will be contacting her fortnightly and that she is compelled to attend court (or risk being in contempt) when she will be only a few weeks post partum, she wants to know where she stands if (for any reason) she feels tyhat she cant attend or comply with what is needed. Apparently her views are not being considered on this (as well they may not if its a high profile case) . I have advised her to contact her professional organisation, try the police again and also a solicitor as I am minded to think that this is not an employement issue as such - any views?
