I suspect such cases will only get resolved at ET. Ooh I think I may choose a diagnosis for myself - numpty intolerance? uniformophobia? ________________________________ From: [log in to unmask] [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Darcy, Paul Sent: 03 June 2010 10:53 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [OCC-HEALTH] HRT Therapy and temperature control Dear all, I have a case at the moment which is very similar - a lady states she can only work between 65 and 68 Fahrenheit otherwise she'll faint. She has several examples of complicity with her belief system from OH doctors, her GP and an A & E doctor whom she saw after a faint. There is no significant underlying pathology although these doctors all agreed with a diagnosis of heat intolerance! Her union rep is citing DDA and air conditioning as a reasonable adjustment. Paul ps. Kevin, I never expected to see a reference to Foucault here - I'm writing a paper on discourses around H1N1 vaccination of healthcare workers and have been getting very Foulcaulted out! ________________________________ From: [log in to unmask] [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Naylor, Sharon [HMPS] Sent: 03 June 2010 10:39 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [OCC-HEALTH] HRT Therapy and temperature control Would be interested to see what others think about whether this is a DDA issue ............does HRT for menopausal symptoms constitute a "condition" or is it a chronological status of health? ________________________________ From: [log in to unmask] [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Jean Greening-Jackson (Occupational Health) Sent: 03 June 2010 10:18 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [OCC-HEALTH] HRT Therapy and temperature control yes I've just finished the GP letter and asked for exactly that....but you know this list...often the answers come! I am looking for a diagnosis, as she is requesting adjustments under the DDA, which would involve heating/shared office/ other employees etc!! ________________________________ From: [log in to unmask] [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Naylor, Sharon [HMPS] Sent: 03 June 2010 10:09 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [OCC-HEALTH] HRT Therapy and temperature control Might be but looking for something like that surely is within the remit of the GP/acute services and not OH? all you can do is advise her to consult with her GP, its their remit to investigate/diagnose ________________________________ From: [log in to unmask] [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Jean Greening-Jackson (Occupational Health) Sent: 03 June 2010 09:32 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [OCC-HEALTH] HRT Therapy and temperature control This is interesting and the most like the symptoms my lady describes. I wouldn't have thought of looking for depression, and she certainly didn't show any signs..you never know though. Thanks for this. My next thought was is it related to a tumour somewhere?? ________________________________ From: [log in to unmask] [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Gill Smith Sent: 02 June 2010 20:02 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [OCC-HEALTH] HRT Therapy and temperature control Hello list I am a new kid on the block regarding Jiscmail which I consider to be a professional lifesaver! In all other respects I am very long in the tooth. The knowledge and information gained has been extremely useful to my practice and I follow each post with great interest. Many thanks and long may the list continue. To the subject in hand: I have had a case very similar in that the employee concerned had a total hysterectomy 15 years previously. However she was no longer having HRT. All bloods were normal including thyroid function. These were taken by her GP for a slightly raised BP (probably due to Ibuprofen and stress - having both at the time) and obesity. She suffered from episodes of extreme cold, shivering, numb finger tips and a temp of 35 C. The episodes would last for several hours and would only subside with hot water bottles, warmed wheat bags, blankets and the room heating increased to over 22 C. She did not visit her GP because the episodes only happened every few months. They did not happen at work - or she was possibly too busy to notice? She was however suffering from an undiagnosed depression. Now diagnosed and treated. No further episodes since but this may be coincidental and / or better weather! A nice warm fleece and gloves brought in from home and kept at work sound just the ticket.................... Plus a visit to the GP. She is consequently asking for extra heating etc in the workplace etc. I can't seem to find anything to substantiate this, although I am awaiting a GP report. Anyone come across this?
