Spencer Kettering
Final Reflection Sped 330

My two main reasons for taking this course were 1) I am an education major, and 2) as an extension of Special Education 212 also taught by Thomas Neuville. Through this 2 courses I have learned that disability is not anything to do with the individual rather it is society that creates the disability.
I came to Millersville as solely a Special Education major, since the completion of these two courses I no longer believe in Special Education and believe that all children no matter the disability should be taught within the same classroom. In the future as a teacher, I will be advocate for inclusion and try to practice inclusion in my own classroom to the greatest extent I am able to. The assumptions that a child with a disability must “overcome” the disability was probably the most impactful comment. Paul Longmore discussed very well about how the child should just accomplish things like everyone else rather than do any overcoming.
I have also taken from this course a wider view than that of just disability. I learned that other factors such as religion, race, class, etc. and the negative effect bigotry has and how common it is. After reading material on bigotry, I became aware of how often it is around me in my life and how sometimes I am guilty of using it myself. I truly have reflected upon myself on ideas and assumptions that have been brought into the spotlight.
In my future as an educator, I plan to continue to work to have disability become an afterthought in society rather than the focus of an individual. As I said I no longer truly believe Special Education is the way to educate individuals with disabilities.
