Project Archivist, Population Investigation Committee

Salary: £25,000 per annum (pro rata)

Location: Central London (initially based at the Committee's offices and subsequently at the Wellcome Library)

Hours per week: 35 hours per week

Type of contract: Fixed-term temporary contract for six months from July 2010

Responsible to: General Secretary, Population Investigation Committee; day-to-day supervision, archival and project management will be provided by a Senior Archivist, Wellcome Library.

Thanks to the generous support of the Nuffield Foundation, an opportunity has arisen for an archivist to work on the historical records of the Population Investigation Committee.

The Committee was founded in 1936, originally to 'examine the trends of population in Great Britain and the Colonies and to investigate the causes of these trends , with special reference to the fall of the birth-rate'. In following years, the Committee developed a broad interest in matters of population, fertility, and family formation, and was responsible for much early research work in this field. The records date from the foundation of the Committee and are a rich resource for twentieth-century social history.

The main object of the post is to arrange the transfer of the records to the Wellcome Library and to assist in their development and deployment as a publicly-accessible scholarly resource. The post-holder will appraise the records in situ and prepare those selected for long-term preservation for transfer to the Library; sort, arrange and catalogue the collection using CALM software; and assist in the preparation of publicity materials about the history and archives of the Committee.

A post-graduate qualification in archive administration is essential, as is experience of cataloguing to appropriate international standards. Experience of CALM software is an advantage. The post-holder should be able to work independently and to a tight deadline.
