The National Archives and the British Library Preservation Advisory Centre are pleased to announce a training day:

 

Introduction to Digitisation

This training day draws on the expertise of staff from The National Archives who have carried out a number of digitisation projects.  The day summarises the practical issues to prepare for when planning and undertaking a digitisation project.  Participants will gain an overview of how to prepare a digitisation strategy; the issues to consider when preparing library and archive items for digitisation, including handling of original materials; practicalities around the set up of a digitisation studio and how to preserve the digital data. 

 

This event is being jointly run by The National Archives and the British Library Preservation Advisory Centre as part of the RLUK/BL Preservation Learning Programme.

09:30    Registration

10:00    Introduction

10:15    Digitisation strategy – stakeholder management, business models, funding, sustainability. 

11:15    Break

11:45    Collection care – spot checks, collection surveys, condition assessment, preparation for scanning, dealing with damaged documents, advice and guidance. 

13:00    Lunch

13:45    In-house digitisation – equipment and set up, resources management, work flows and document tracking, technical advice.

14:30    Metadata and discovery/access to online images

15:15    Break

15:30    Digital preservation – storage equipment, methods and formats, PRONOM

16:30    End
