PHD STUDENTSHIP IN THE AREA OF DRUG AND ALCOHOL MISUSE

Applications are invited for a 3-year, fully funded PhD studentship in the area of drug and alcohol misuse.  The studentship will be based in the new Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at Oxford Brookes University. The Faculty brings together researchers within social sciences and psychology, biomedical sciences, nutrition, movement science, nursing and allied health professions.  The studentship is aligned with the University’s strategic research theme of Health and the Environment and, within the Faculty, will be based in the Brookes Drugs and Alcohol Research Group. 

Applications are sought from outstanding candidates to conduct one of the following studies:
•	An ethnographic study of drug use within emergency hostels and night shelters 
•	An exploration of diet and nutrition amongst heroin users receiving prescribing interventions
•	Development and validation of a screening instrument for alcohol use during pregnancy

Suitable candidates will be highly motivated and have a strong commitment to academic research.  A Masters degree with a significant research training element is required, although a programme of research training workshops and research seminars will be provided.  Relevant disciplines include sociology of health and illness, anthropology, health psychology, social work and social policy.  Professional experience in health or social care may also be an asset.   

The studentship will commence in October 2010, although a delayed start in January 2011 will also be considered.  The studentship will cover fees at the home/EU rate and provide a tax-free stipend of £13,590 per year, rising annually in line with ESRC studentships.
