Thanks Andrew, Patrick and Doug - Patrick, a catbird is an aberrant bowerbird (aberrant in that it builds no bower), a little larger and much stockier than a domestic pigeon, emerald green with red eyes and scattered white markings, inhabiting eastern Australian rainforests. Its song resembles a baby crying or cat being run over, and its more usual but lesser known call sounds like a tiny silver hammer. You can see and hear one at: http://birdsinbackyards.net/species/Ailuroedus-crassirostris Brian --- On Wed, 26/5/10, Patrick McManus <[log in to unmask]> wrote: From: Patrick McManus <[log in to unmask]> Subject: Re: Catbird Snap To: [log in to unmask] Received: Wednesday, 26 May, 2010, 4:16 PM Brian enjoyed this but I do not know what a catbird is?? -----Original Message----- From: Poetryetc: poetry and poetics [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Brian Hawkins Sent: 25 May 2010 23:23 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Catbird Snap CATBIRD Catbird hunting mandarins Escapes from the tree And tinks like a tiny hammer As he returns, Praising the steep blue sky Where silent jets Drag tails of flaming gossamer.
