Hi Sharon,
If you take bloods at 6 months you will get a response but it is unlikely to be an accurate reflection of the immunity.
When someone has a booster or exposure to Hep B & they are immune the body recognises the Hep B Virus & makes antibodies in direct response that is what you are measuring in the blood test. We do not go around 24/7 with a body full of antibodies ‘just in case’ but the body keeps the blue print for future use if required so the longer the delay the lower the antibody level may be which is why the recommendation is to boost then check response at 8 weeks.
I would recommend that you do the blood test & then assess the response.
Hope this makes sense

I think I need to clarify - I have been told that if blood test taken > 4 months post last jab the results may not be that accurate. I think what I REALLy want to know (and worded it very clumsily last time) is - is there a time when you WOULDNT take bloods.

Have read this with interest.
If someone is unable to confirm immunity we blood test to establish titre level.
<10miu/ml non immune repeat course
>10 but <99 miu/ml partial immunity, immediate booster then repeat single booster after 5 years no other action
>100miu/ml immune single booster dose after 5 years.
Proviso is if individual has needlestick injury booster always offered - down to them to decline.
Never assume immunity, it may never have taken effect ie age, health etc etc.
I was told by a wise Irishman when I was 18years old (going back a bit!!!!) if you ass-u-me it makes a mockery of both of us. You clever ones out there can identify the full saying!

If you refer to the Green Book, chapter on Hep B, under COSHH regulations an individual worker has a right to know whether or not they have been protected. There is the potential they are a non-responded which needs to be known in the event of an NSI. And check their antigen at the same time if not already done so.

Sharon,
I still take the blood test. Just as baseline and it helps I feel.
This was the way I did in the NHS.

I know this has been asked before .........
Hep B vaccination, individuals fail to attend for blood tests, now > 6/12 later, undertaking exposure prone work. Do you assume immunity?
