Dear Colleagues,

Please find below details of a number of training programmes currently
recruiting at the Tavistock and Portman - Britain's leading provider of
multidisciplinary postgraduate training in mental health and social
care.

Working with Groups

This course aims to develop an understanding of group dynamics and how
groups work; what makes groups function effectively and what may 'get in
the way', and how to apply these ideas to your work.

Gain a grounding in psychoanalytic and systemic approaches applied to
groups. Achieve a greater self-awareness and understanding of the roles
you take up in groups, and how you contribute to group functioning.
Develop more effective skills as a group leader, manager, facilitator or
member. It has been developed to help those involved in working with
groups to function more effectively as group leaders, managers and
therapists, in response to the increasing amount of work being carried
out in (and with) groups and the relative lack of formal training in
groupwork.

Therapeutic Communication with Children

This multidisciplinary course will enhance your communication with
children and their families. It is practice-based, and you will learn
basic aspects of therapeutic communication.

This course is for professionals from a wide range of disciplines,
including social work, education, psychology and related fields.

Early Years Development and Infant Mental Health

A part-time, two-year course for professionals working with infants,
children under five or their families, in health or 'children, schools
and families' settings.

It offers an experiential and theoretical approach to understanding
children's emotional, social and cognitive development.

Advanced Award/Professional Doctorate in Social Work

Gain an advanced, specialised training in social work practice,
management and/or education

Emotional Factors in Learning and Teaching: Counselling Aspects in
Education

This course provides a strong basis for both understanding and dealing
with challenging students of all ages. Its high-calibre staff bring
their knowledge of the world of education and their clinical and
theoretical expertise to their teaching. The course equips teachers and
other education staff to deal with difficult situations in the
classroom, within their organisation and multi-agency networks.

Risk: A Relational Perspective - Psychodynamic Approaches to Assessing
and Managing Risk

This course offers an innovative framework for understanding the complex
and subtle issues involved in assessing and managing risk of violence
and sexual offending. Traditional approaches to risk assessment are
useful in identifying groups of individuals who pose a high risk, but
such approaches can be rather blunt when formulating the risk profile
for a particular individual. Consequently, the field of risk assessment
is moving from a reliance on actuarial instruments and risk prediction,
to one of risk formulation.

Working with People with Eating Disorders

This course is designed for experienced professionals working with
patients with eating disorders or feeding difficulties in a variety of
settings. The approach adopted is based on the thoughtful application of
psychoanalytic principles and ideas. Students are expected to be working
with one or more of the models suggested in NICE guidelines.

Psychodynamic Approaches to Working with Adolescents

Adolescents pose a challenge to all who work with them. Frontline
professionals working with adolescents will find this course a useful
learning experience in managing complex cases. This multidisciplinary
course provides a detailed psychodynamic introduction to the
understanding of the psychosocial development, problems and disturbances
of adolescence. The interaction between biological, psychological and
social factors is highlighted as contributing to mental health and
disorders.

Working in the Young People's Consultation Service (YPCS)

Help to develop your understanding of the difficulties of adolescence
and young adulthood, increase your skills in working with the 16 - 30
age group and learn about working within a psychoanalytically-informed
brief work model.

Family Therapy and Systemic Supervision

This course is designed for qualified systemic family psychotherapists
to train as systemic supervisors.

Supervision: A Psychological Approach

The BPS quality standards for psychology services make clear the
increasing importance that is attached to supervision. This course has
been developed in the context of the BPS requirements on educational
psychology services to provide supervision, and also the move to three
year training.

Strategic Leadership and Management

This programme has a different orientation to other management
qualifications (such as an MBA), particularly in the experiential nature
of the course and its focus on group relations and the observation of
organisations.

This course is designed for leaders and managers in social services,
health services, education services and voluntary sector projects.

Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Well-being: Multidisciplinary
Practice

This course provides a standalone year introducing fundamental aspects
of child, adolescent and family mental health. It can also be taken as
the first year of one of four MA pathways.

This new innovative multimodal and multidisciplinary programme of study
is for counsellors, practitioners and managers working with children,
young people and families. The course provides understanding of
essential issues in therapeutic work with children young people and
families such as the latest developmental theory and research in
childhood and family development, key presenting issues and evidence
based practice in relation to these and key therapeutic concepts.

Understanding Trauma: Principles and Practice

This one-year, part-time course is for professionals working with people
coming for help following experiences of trauma. This includes
presentations of PTSD, single episodes of trauma, multiple or chronic
trauma, complex trauma, and childhood trauma.
