David,
A recently designated war memorial at Wheeler End Common in Bucks [LBS ref 504241] is a very simple painted wooden cross.  Note 'simple' not 'austere'!

Is it a Norfolk County Council standard design by any chance?...I seem to remember that the war memorial at Old Catton is similar.  I would have thought that your memorial is a perfect example of the sort of design elements that you'd expect to see at a WWII airbase.

Subject: War memorials - designation

A slight change of tack in the War Memorials thread, but just to ask if anyone has had any problems or successes with getting a war memorial listed? There is a presumption in favour of listing WMs, but a recent designation request in Norfolk was declined by EH on the basis that "While all war memorials possess strong local resonance, this is an austere example of a village war memorial which holds little architectural interest."
Can anyone provide an example of the recent designation of a similiarly 'austere' WM?
