Dear Martha,

This is a common type of preservation for crinoids when found in a rock other than limestone (often chert, as this seems to be). The voids aren’t around the stems – they are the stems! The rod in the centre is an infilling of the axial canal of the column (where all the ligaments etc were in life), and the void is the dissolved skeleton itself. This type of preservation is actually a lot better for echinoderms than you might think, in that you can often get very high-resolution casts of the skeleton; in limestones, it’s often hard to separate the fossil from matrix.

This is probably from one of the cherty layers in the Carboniferous Limestone.

All the best,

Joe

Subject: Interesting crinoid

Hi,

A member of the public brought an interesting crinoid specimen in to the museum – photo attached. Can anyone tell me more about it – why are there voids around the crinoid stems? Is this unusual or just new to me?

Any comments are very welcome.

Best wishes,

Martha Lawrence
