CALL FOR PAPERS

May, 2010

UWI Quality Education Forum

Special Issue on Foundation Courses

Theme: "Post-colonial Perspectives: The Politics and Place of Foundation Courses in the University of the Twenty-first Century"

We invite proposals related to the pressures and issues that all Foundation Courses (survey courses, general education courses, university courses) at the university level face from political, institutional, socio-cultural, economic, technological and other spheres of influence. We especially welcome proposals that locate Foundation Courses within the broad theoretical frame of post-colonial theories which give emphasis to the development of independent identities and thought among people in post-colonial societies. Additionally, special consideration will be given to proposals which seek to explore the way(s) in which Foundation Courses meet the mandate of the University of the Twenty-first Century which must prepare students to understand both the local and global spaces they occupy.

The following are some topics on which proposals are invited:

  1. The purpose, value and relevance of Foundation Courses in a university curriculum.
  2. The history of Foundation Courses within and across institutions.
  3.  The focus of Foundation Courses at the university level.
  4.  Teacher education and Foundation Courses.
  5.  Collaborative teaching among instructors of Foundation Courses.
  6.  University policy and educational practices related to Foundation Courses.
  7.  Perception and attitudes of faculty and students to Foundation Courses.
  8.  The University of the West Indies’ Strategic Plan and Foundation Courses.
  9.  Foundation Courses in graduate level programmes.
  10. The future of Foundation Courses/ General Education Courses at the university level.
