ESRC SEMINAR SERIES:
Cyber-Spaces & Virtual Learning
10-5 pm on Thursday, 3
June 2010, Bldg 58a, Highfield Campus, University of Southampton
The seminar will consider implications of the
recent growth in e-learning and uses of cyber-space in
knowledge-creation/dissemination. Schools, universities and workplaces are
increasingly utilising ICTs, allowing formal processes of learning to occur
‘remotely’, outside the traditional confines of the classroom (in
spaces such as homes, libraries, workplaces, airports, etc). Consequently,
established conceptions of where learning can and should take place are being
significantly challenged. The widespread use of cyber-space has, arguably,
‘democratised’ learning and the knowledge associated with learning,
although questions about equitable access to this space remain (Edwards &
Usher, 2008). The seminar will address these very current debates, examining
uses and the extent of internet-based learning; local, national and
international geographies (and social inequalities) of virtual education; and
the future of ICTs in learning and its impact on education.
