Danny, You misunderstand. There is no "objection" to the MB that an employer will take seriously. They have already paid a consultancy firm to use it as have their "competition" - thus, if you don't like it, take the day off

If you're not up for pulling a sickie and risking being labelled in your absence:

The MBTI is based upon Jung's personality types. For a critique of his methods and theories see Noll's 'The Jung Cult: Origins of a charismatic movement'.

For a broader critical perspective on unified personality theories within psychology see Sloan's chapter on personality in Fox et al's 'Critical Psychology'. A pretty good starting point in my view is pointing out that nearly all of the personality theorists cited on undergrad courses are white men who come from Europe or the US and were writing within societies dominated by individualistic ideologies and discourses. Therefore the focus of attention in the theories is on characteristics that maintain the interests of these societies.                                                                                                                                                                                          .

The Myers Briggs foundation have a range of ethical guidelines on their website; http://www.myersbriggs.org/myers-and-briggs-foundation/ethical-use-of-the-mbti-instrument/ethics-for-administering.asp

It is also just a really silly silly questionnaire that tries to force people into a tiny number of preconceived character boxes that do a massive disservice to the multiplicity and complexity of individual and collective human experience. Although that may not represent what you could call a coherent or sensible objection.

Good luck with it.

Danny

The Myers Briggs has been used for a long time to persecute/assess people in industry and - increasingly - in the NHS and academia. There is no coherent response. Say it's a great idea and take the day off sick

Dear list

I am turning to you for some clarity of thinking, (as regards this assessment).

My team at work is asking that we complete this assessment for ‘fun team building’. We are being encouraged to participate in this. It has been sold as teambuilding, but there is an implicit pressure to participate, & management have not said anything about how they really want to use the data, (other than the very vague notion of ‘teambuilding’).

This is not a comfortable position to be in and I am finding it hard to put my unease about this in coherent terms to management.

I suspect there is a some guidance (?from professional bodies) about the ethical use of psychometric assessments: who/how/when/why should be used. Can anyone point me towards such guidance? Furthermore the Myers Briggs tool I gather is not a well validated tool (?).  Can anyone point me towards solid criticisms of it?

So I wonder of anyone on the list can share some ideas to help me think about how I might form a coherent, sensible objection to taking part in this assessment..... and I thought this whole process unsettling, but interesting when in this increasingly anxiety provoking economic climate, employers are turning to elements of the psy-complex, and management guru stuff, to continue to make life unpredictable for employees !

Cheers, Matt.
