Call:
Following Proto-type Theater’s successful residency in 2009-10, the School of Arts and New Media, University of Hull @ Scarborough seeks to commission a professional facilitator and/or performance artist(s) to make one or a series of new performances working with Year 3 students of our BA in Theatre and Performance and the BA in Media Performance. We are looking for an experienced contemporary performance practitioner or company, with a strong body of innovative work. Some experience of facilitating workshops is required. Experience of teaching /facilitating workshops within HE is desirable.
 
We envisage this as a two-week working residency, which should result to performance work(s) of professional (or near-professional) quality. The performance outcome(s) will be presented to the public at the end of this residency, as part of Coastival, see http://www.coastival.com/ The materials and work methods involved should allow and encourage students to undertake a high degree of initiative and responsibility in developing the work further after the end of the residency, for touring to national or international festivals, as the foundation for individual artistic practice or for funding a graduate company.
 
The residence will be hosted within the University of Hull’s Scarborough campus. Our facilities include three professional, flexible workshop/performance venues of up to 80 capacity, a workshop studio and other facilities that can be booked according to requirements. The venues are equipped with professional lighting, sound systems, computers, wireless broadband and projectors. Other equipment can become available if required, upon negotiation. The artist will be supported before and throughout the residency by the module coordinator and production tutors.
 
Applications are invited from artists based in the UK or overseas. Short-listed artists will be interviewed by phone or skype. Proposals by undergraduate students will not be considered.
 
The selection panel consists of:

The working residency will take place from the 7th till the 20th of February 2011.

The selected artist will be expected to:
 
Be in consultation with the Module Coordinator prior to the beginning of the residency in order to develop materials and agree on methods employed for the workshop delivery.
 
Deliver appropriate materials prior to the beginning of the residency, so that the students can be adequately prepared for the intensive sessions.
 
Deliver 36 hours of workshop time during a two-week residency, which will result to outcomes as described above.
 
Support the students for the presentation of these outcomes to public audiences in Scarborough, as part of Coastival, at the end of the two weeks residency.
 
Budget:

Artist’s fee (inclusive of expenses such as travel, accommodation and per diem): £4,000
[non-EU applicants will also need to cover work permit expenses from this fee]
 
Production budget for Scarborough presentation: £500
 
The resident artist will also be supported by SANM staff and will have access to SANM’s facilities and equipment.

Your proposal should include:

500-1,000-word summary of the project and the intended outcome(s)
 
300-500-word description of the methods you intend to employ in order to achieve intended outcome(s)
 
Relevant visual documentation (if available)
 
CV (please state experience as workshop facilitator, experience of teaching in Higher Education and whether you have a recent CRB check)
 
Name and contact details of two referees (preferably one would be based in an academic setting)
 
Selected visual documentation of past projects
 
For visual documentation: please restrict image numbers to 10 max. and showreel duration to 20mins max. DVDs should either be region free or encoded for region 2.
 
Deadline for Submissions:

25 June 2010, 17:00.
 
Please note:  

The appointment is on a freelance basis and all fees are inclusive of VAT
 
Selection Criteria:

The residency is aimed at supporting a professional performance artist(s) or facilitator and is not restricted by media.
 
Particular attention will be given to:
a)    how the artist intends to engage with the students
b)    the originality of the proposed project and outcomes
c)    the methods proposed for supporting the students to furthering their practice
d)    the relevance of the proposed project in line with our curriculum
e)    how the artist intends to use this opportunity to inform /advance his/her professional practice
