Research Associate in the Herschel-SPIRE Instrument Team Astrophysics

Salary GBP 30,520 to GBP 33,080 per annum

Fixed term: 2 years in the first instance, commencing 1 July 2010, with
a possibility of extension.

Applications are invited for a two-year Research Associate position in
the Astrophysics Group, to start on July 1st 2010 or as soon as possible
thereafter. The successful applicant will become part of the
Herschel-SPIRE Instrument Control Centre (ICC) team. They will
participate in instrument operations, working on SPIRE instrument health
monitoring, planning and analysing calibration and engineering
observations. They will also contribute to the SPIRE data processing
system, including the investigation, testing and implementation of
improved data processing algorithms. The successful candidate will also
be able to become involved in the Herschel-SPIRE guaranteed time science
observations.

The postholder will be expected to contribute to the Department's
teaching activities up to approximately half a day per week during the
academic year, as appropriate.

A PhD, or equivalent level, of professional qualifications and
experience in a related discipline is essential. A strong background in
infrared, far infrared and/or submiillimetre astronomy is essential.
Experience with coding astronomical data processing software, and
preferably with large software projects is desirable, experience in
astronomical data reduction methods is essential and software
development for astronomical or space instrumentation is desirable.
Knowledge of Jython or Python is desirable and experience in coding in
Java is desirable.
