Rigorous and Relevant: Using ATLAS.ti Software in Qualitative Research James Drisko, PhD Friday and Saturday June 11 and 12, 2010 Smith College School for Social Work Northampton, Massachusetts This workshop is geared to doctoral students, faculty and other researchers interested in advancing their knowledge and skills in qualitative and mixed methodologies. It is offered to present a unique opportunity for participants to learn about qualitative methods, engage in interactive learning, and network with one another. Emphasis will be placed upon enhancing rigor in widely used research approaches (i.e., content analyses, structured template approaches, Grounded Theory and immersion approaches). The format will combine lectures with extensive hands-on exercises and group discussion. The ATLAS.ti "demo" program, data files and a printed User's Guide will be provided to participants. Social work CEUs for the workshop are available. Day 1 of this workshop will introduce a continuum of qualitative data analysis methods. This continuum will be illustrated using the four most widely used qualitative research approaches found in the social work literature. Day 1 of this workshop will focus on content analysis and semi-structured "template" approaches to qualitative research. Illustrations of each method will be offered, using ATLAS.ti software and provided sample data sets. Participants will be introduced to using the core features of the ATLAS.ti qualitative data analysis software. The goal is to refine understanding of core qualitative methods and related qualitative data analysis methods. There will be hands-on work individually and in small groups. Day 2 will focus on Grounded Theory and less structured approaches to qualitative data analysis. Participants will use ATLAS.ti to set up and begin data analyses on sample data sets. Day 2 will also involve use of multimedia files as well as text materials as part of the qualitative data analyses. Advanced features of ATLAS.ti will be introduced. Drisko, PhD, LICSW is Professor and Co-Director of the Doctoral Program at the Smith College School for Social Work in Northampton, Massachusetts where he teaches research and clinical practice. Dr. Drisko has published extensively on qualitative research methods and standards for qualitative studies and reports. He serves on several editorial boards for social work journals. He is well known as a trainer on ATLAS.ti, having done juried and invited workshops at several national conferences, several workshops for IASWR in Washington, DC and at Universities including Columbia University, University of Texas Austin, UC Berkeley, even University of Alaska at Anchorage! Dr. Drisko has also presented on ATLAS.ti and using qualitative data analysis software at both SSWR and CSWE APM conferences and annually at the Institute for the Advancement of Social Work Research in Washington DC. He served as a beta tester for the release of ATLAS.ti version 5. About Northampton: The home of beautiful and academically distinguished Smith College, Northampton Massachusetts is widely known for its great places to eat and to listen to music. People come to Northampton from miles around for its great restaurants and many take in a concert at one of several theatres or clubs. Northampton is about 150 miles from New York City and 100 miles from Boston, MA. Air travelers come through Bradley Airport in Hartford, CT (about 30 minutes south of Northampton).
