Glen Beck Loves BlazeVOX
[books]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Poetryetc,
In a strange bit of
news, I read online that Glen Beck; yes, that Glen Beck had nothing but nice
things to say about our press live on his radio show this morning. "It's
national poetry month again, and I wanted to tell you the truth about poets and
the anti-america social agenda they seek .... When I was in a on my way to the
airport, my publicist left a few books for me to look over for upcoming shows.
They were poetry, yuck, right, and other weirdo stuff, but with nothing else
within reach but a copy of that liberal rag, The New York Times I went with the
BlazeVOX [books]. I know, I know poetry and that entire ilk of lily livered
liberality can turn one into a commie, or worse in no time at all. But I gave
it a try, if only to dismiss this stuff out of hand. But after long heart-felt deliberations,
and after careful reading these books, there is great wisdom to be found in
them. I urge you to buy and read these profound works; and if you are able,
please donate as much as you can to this worthwhile organization.
Go figure :-)
Best, Geoffrey
Evan Lavender-Smith's
From Old Notebooks
hits #5 in Amazon ranking
 this book now!
Here is a neat
review from HTML Giant:
http://htmlgiant.com/book-reviews/some-thoughts-on-evan-lavender-smiths-from-old-notebooks/
____________
From Old Notebooks is a memoir, a novel, a poem, an essay - a
self-styled memoivel - which exemplifies how love of language
and literature enriches our lives, and explores, often with great humor,
the many pitfalls confronting a young writer and father on his journey
to maturity. Each entry in From Old Notebooks is literally that
- an idea written in a writer's draftbook. Within this unconventional
format, Lavender-Smith is able to tell us the story of his life while
ruminating on subjects ranging from fatherhood to philosophy, art,
football, music, politics, TV, teaching, fear of death, and everything
in between. In the process, Lavender-Smith lays bare the day-to-day
trials and tribulations of an artist confronted by the pressures of
culture, family, writing, and, simply, being. Witty, original, poignant
and deeply insightful, From Old Notebooks is a coming-of-age
story, an ode to writing and reading, to living and loving - a
celebration of "human thought in all its glory, all its mundanity."
The great tradition of
modern philosophy and letters, from Nietzsche and Artaud to Deleuze and
Houellebecq, has taught us this much: maintaining the old grammars,
figures and style of humanist narrative will never allow us to think.
While sustaining a beauty of textual expression Lavender-Smith has
nevertheless created a new genre of literature and a new mode and style
of thought. This work is at once intellectually compelling and
creatively breathtaking. This is a book to be read slowly, carefully and
with thoughtful pleasure.
Feeling for the Ground
by Tom Clark
"Pretty much exactly like Tom Thumb's Blues, Mr. Clark goes on as
ever letting his sensibility seep like rain through all the great
American vernacular sites - film noir, baseball, the shore, dreams - and
the result is a sequence of utterances that feel both timeless and
inexhaustibly resonant."  -Jonathan Lethem
Virtual AWP
Unfortunately,
I won't be going to AWP in Denver. The money I saved up to go, I used to buy
1000 new ISBN numbers as there was a great sale going on :-) This is 12 years
of resources so I think it was a wise decision. I'll be at the next one though
:-)
However-
I am
going to put up a virtual AWP table online! We'll have $10 books that will be
shipped right to you at your home so you don't have to carry them across the
country! I'll also post a video introduction to the press and a few videos of
me reading a poem to two :-) So hurray and stay tuned for more info!
