Hi Lesley,
I have to echo the responses so far. I am Programme Leader on the SCPHN(OH) Programme (NMC Approved) noted below at The University of The West of Scotland and the Pre requisite for entry to this is 2 years post registration experience. At validation of the Programme I had to qualify my reason for this and as both Paul and Ros have said that experience of general nursing skills/patient communication etc is crucial. Once you qualify I would suggest you talk to OHN's and try and attend some of the conferences (students often get reduced rates and there is also Florence Nightingale Foundation and other trusts for which you can apply for funding). Your enthusiasm at this time will shine through and before too long you will be being approached to come and work for OH providers, etc.

Stay focussed and enthusiastic.
Kind regards, Marisa

Dear Lesley,

I am in total agreement with Paul as he has made some very valid points.
I have been nursing for a number of years and when I came into
Occupational Health I believed that I would be very well equipped for
anything that was thrown at me! That was not the case it is so
different, but I have to say that all of my years of experience with
patients on the wards looking after their health has certainly given me
the skills to assess and identify problems encountered by the workforce
when they are ill.

Ros

Many Thanks

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] OH Experience Day and Magazines Request

Hello Group,

I'm a student nurse who is fast approaching third year at the University
of Nottingham. My sole desire is to secure a position in Occupational
Health just as soon as I can get my foot in the door, but I need a
little help from a friend...

The problem is: 1) My uni have pulled the plug on my OH placement at the
end of second year due to staffing issues and 2) I can't get my hands on
an OH Magazine for more than 24 hours at a time because of the silly
rules my university library live by.

Would anyone in the Nottingham area be able to offer me an insight day
or afternoon as a sort of: 'day in the life of an OH Nurse'? And; if
anyone out there is feeling charitable with old OH Magazines (not later
than 2009 editions please) then I would happily take them off your hands
and pay for the p&p if it helps any?

I look forward to hearing from a kind soul out there who might be able
to lend a hand.

Lesley Armiger
