medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Hi Maddy, As you may have gathered not a lot of 'plakken' have been saved, as a broken or damaged one immediately was thrown into the fire. I have seen a few, and they were very simple, hand carved instruments with very little or no decoration at all. In paintings and prints you sometimes see them with turned handles, which means that the flat part must have been fixed on this separately. I've seen one on the website of our national open air museum with a carved face on the plaque. See: http://www.openluchtmuseum.nl/pid/200/. This of course does not mean that there haven't been 'plakken' with whittled decoration; I can imagine that one used in a church school had a cross carved in it. Were the Dutch examples also decorated? Was there a school attached to this church? This instrument, namely, is what we in Nederland call a 'plak', in English a ferule or ferula. It's a punisher for lazy or dumb schoolchildren and used to beat the hand when somebody in the eyes of the teacher deserved to be chastised. When you look at 16th-17th c Dutch paintings of schoolscenes (Pieter Brueghel, Jan Steen, Adriaen van Ostade, Jan Luyken) you see it both in use or hanging next to or from the teacher's chair.
