Welcome

The fifth National Cartographic Conference GeoCart'2010 and the first ICA
Symposium on Cartography for Australasia and Oceania will convene in Auckland,
1-4 September 2010. It will be held at the outstanding facilities of The University
of Auckland in the City of Sails - Auckland, New Zealand. The Conference is
endorsed by the International Cartographic Association (ICA).
Invited Speakers include:

* Cynthia Brewer, Pennsylvania State University, USA
* Manfred Buchroithner, TU Dresden, Germany
* David Crossman, Royal New Zealand Navy, New Zealand
* Phil Allen, GeoSmart, New Zealand
* Colin MacDonald, LINZ, New Zealand
There will be a book associated with the conference, collating the best papers
as reviewed by an international scientific programme committee and published in
Springer’s Lecture Notes in Geoinformation and Cartography series.

GeoCart Conference Theme
------------------------
The theme of GeoCart'2010 is Cartographies of Tomorrow: Mapping in a mashed-up
world.
On the one hand we have a growing openness and collaboration with access to
geospatial data. On the other we have an increasing range of sensors providing
ubiquitous information to multiple platforms at declining cost and in real
time. Couched between the two is the mashup and new opportunities. Watch this
space.
Suggested major topics include:
- Technology-led examples in Geovisualisation and cartography (e.g. Web
cartography and mapping the Web / Mashups, Geovisualisation for Collaboration,
Maps on mobile devices, Virtual and Augmented Reality, Game-based interaction
and visualisation);
- Cartographic Representation (e.g. 3D Cartography, Visualisation of Spatial
Uncertainty, Mapping in Space and Time, Generalisation, Symbology, Art and
Cartography);
- Application of Cartography (e.g. the challenge of ubiquitous maps for
everyone, mountain / terrestrial / urban / coastal / marine cartography,
cartography in education, national mapping, resource mapping, grassroots /
community mapping);
- Cognition and Usability (e.g. interfaces and their testing, metaphors,
cognitive or mental maps);
- Exploratory Geovisualisation;
- Cross-cutting issues (e.g. personal geographies and their mapping, ubiquitous
cartographies, the philosophy of cartography / critical cartography,
visualisation for Spatial Decision Support / Geovisual Analytics);
These topics are by no means exclusive and any cartographically-related
submission is welcomed.
In addition, the conference will host the National Cartographic Exhibition,
including a Children's Map Competition, and GeoExpo'2010 - a Commercial
Exhibition focused on the latest innovations related to technology, products,
applications and services offered by the top national and international
manufacturers and vendors.
Proceedings
-----------
The Scientific and Technical Programme Committee invites authors to submit
papers, abstracts or posters to the GeoCart'2010 Conference. We are planning
two separate publications:
1. A book published in Springer’s Lecture Notes in Geoinformation and
Cartography series, which will contain the best full GeoCart'2010 papers
submitted, subject to an international review process
2. Conference proceedings on CD-Rom, which collates
- abstracts of the Springer papers
- papers that did not pass the review process for the book, but were accepted
for either paper or poster presentation at the GeoCart'2010 Conference
- papers and (extended) abstracts that were specifically submitted for the
GeoCart'2010 Conference proceedings (either paper or poster, subject to a local
review process)
- unrefereed professional paper and poster submissions
Submission
------------
There are three streams of submission for the conference:
1. Academic papers of up to 8000 words to be considered for publication
in Springer’s Lecture Notes in Geoinformation and Cartography series, subject
to a double blind review from two international referees. Papers must be
formatted according to the Springer guidelines

and template (http://www.springer.com/cda/content/document/cda_downloaddocument/T1-book.zip?SGWID=0-0-45-392600-0)
and be in a camera-ready state. Submission of the paper will be in MS Word
format via the EasyChair conference management system
(http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=geocart2010). It is expected that
authors of accepted papers in this category will give an oral presentation
2. Extended abstracts or papers of up to 5000 words to be reviewed by a
local committee for publication in the GeoCart proceedings. Papers and
abstracts must be formatted according to the GeoCart'2010 Guidelines for
Authors (http://www.cartography.org.nz/geocart2010/pdf/ga-authors.pdf).
Submission of the paper will be in MS Word format via the EasyChair conference
management system (http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=geocart2010). It
is expected that authors of accepted papers in this category will give an oral
presentation
3. Unrefereed abstracts or papers of up to 5000 words. These may be
professional submissions and / or poster submissions. Papers, abstracts and
posters must be formatted according to the GeoCart'2010 Guidelines for Authors
(http://www.cartography.org.nz/geocart2010/pdf/ga-authors.pdf). Submission of
the paper will be in MS Word format via the EasyChair conference management
system (http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=geocart2010). It is expected
that authors of abstracts / papers in this category will either give an oral or
poster presentation
