My question is about how many remakes are clearly better than the original films, however you want to cash out the comparative term. The only one that comes to mind is The Maltese Falcon, which shines well above its two predecessors (at least by critical reputation...but that was an earlier era). What about more recent remakes (say, in the last 30 years)? All these recent remakes of classic horror films seem bogus (I shudder to think of the Nightmare remake)...I do love the 1980's remake of The Thing, however..

For good reading on this topic see Fear, Cultural Anxiety and Transformation, an anthology on remakes of horror, sci-fi and fantasy films edited by John Marmysz and Scott Lucas (Lexington Books, 2008)
