Dear Lee

This comment could apply to many qualifications.  How many employers now specify as essential a first degree, or even a Masters degree, for posts previously occupied by those qualified by experience?  This is a side effect of the greater availability of candidates with degrees, and bad luck for those who belong to a generation that had less access to that level of education, and the time when some degree courses did not provide the vocational knowledge that employers required and were therefore not worthwhile taking.

But does it?

I know of many highly competent and qualified (by experience rather than study) IG people who would by that standard be immediately discarded as the don’t have the ISEB.

In HR speak I think the qualifications should be desirable rather than essential.

Tim - fair enough, but what about when employers are recruiting? When you receive several hundred applications for a post there is simply no way you can fully assess each candidate to see if they are competent, can add value etc etc without setting some criteria. It seems to me that having a criterion of a qualification in a suitably-accredited course of study is a pretty good way of helping with at least a first sift.
