The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, located in Bloomsbury, central London, is a registered charity affiliated to Yale University.  The Centre has two complementary purposes: to contribute to the understanding of British painting, sculpture and architecture through publishing, awarding grants and fellowships, and hosting conferences and seminars;  and to provide scholars with facilities to study British Art and Culture in London through its library, photographic archive and collected archives. The collected archives comprise primarily the papers of a number of 20th century art historians, including Sir Oliver Millar, Sir Brinsley Ford, Sir Roy Strong, John Hayes and Sir Ellis Waterhouse.

A comprehensive review of the collected archives was undertaken in 2009 and the Centre is now seeking an experienced, qualified archivist to appraise, weed, arrange and catalogue the material according to ISAD(G).  The work should be based on recommendations made in the report compiled during the 2009 review.

The post-holder will be required to acquire, install and implement CALM archive cataloguing software. He / she will also need to develop in-house cataloguing standards and an on-line public interface, ensuring that the catalogues are available to the public via the Centre’s website.  He / she will also be expected to provide an archive reference and enquiry service and some supervision of readers.

Applicants should have at least 3 years post-qualification experience, a knowledge of British art history and experience of working with CALM archive cataloguing software.

To apply for the post, an application should be sent to: Project Archivist Vacancy, The Librarian, The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, 16 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3JA or [log in to unmask].  The application should consist of a full CV including the names, addresses and day-time telephone numbers of two referees as well as  a covering letter.
