Lions tight end Casey Fitzsimmons and long snapper Don Muhlbach suffered
concussions last season, and the NFL this off-season announced stricter
guidelines on allowing players to return from concussions. Dr. Eric
Braverman, a neurologist and sports medicine expert at New York
Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, recently spoke with
Free Press sports writer Carlos Monarrez about brain injuries and what can
be done to protect athletes better.

Q:

How do you treat brain injuries?

A: Today I saw a person: 4 years old, she hit her head. She has
encephalomalacia -- a type of traumatic encephalopathy (or brain disease)
-- four years later. These injuries last a lifetime. We actually have a
technique that deals with them; they're called seizure medicine and
nutrients that actually slows the course of the illness.

Additional Questions Asked in This Interview

Q: Does the treatment just slow the injury or does it cure it?

Q: How long should treatment last for brain injuries?

Q: As it pertains to the NFL, what can be done to protect players better?

Q: What needs to be done to make football helmets better?

Q: The NFL recently instituted new guidelines for concussions. Is that a
step in the right direction or just a drop in the bucket?

Q: Some people say football is a dangerous game, but the players know what
they've gotten themselves into by participating in such a violent sport.
Is that fair?

Q: Does the macho culture in football sometimes prevent players from
seeking adequate treatment?

Q: Do you ever run into the problem with athletes you treat who are fully
honest about symptoms and just want to return to playing?
