Dear Colleagues
We would like to invite you to the launch conference of the new Centre on Household Assets and Savings Management (CHASM):

The wealth chasm:
from inequality to inclusion in housing, pension and financial assets
Tuesday 25th May 2010, 2-5.15pm
G12 Main Lecture Theatre, Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham

Conference themes
At a time of increasing economic uncertainty and growing inequality, the UK, like many other advanced economies, has seen a shift from collective welfare provision towards more individual provision.  However, many people appear to lack the financial means or capability to manage this effectively.  The University of Birmingham has established a new Centre on Household Assets and Savings Management (CHASM) to investigate these issues.  Based jointly in the School of Social Policy and the Birmingham Business School, the Centre aims to provide a focus for world-class research on the distribution and role of assets in people’s lives from housing to pensions to financial savings.  This launch conference will discuss some of the key themes of the new Centre.

Speakers include:
Nicki Cleal, Director of the Pensions Policy Institute
John Hills, Director of the Centre for the Analysis of Social Exclusion (CASE), Professor of Social Policy, London School of Economics and Political Science
Brian Pomeroy CBE, Chairman UK Financial Inclusion Taskforce
Chris Pond, Director, Financial Capability Division, Financial Services Authority
Karen Rowlingson, Director of CHASM, Professor of Social Policy, University of Birmingham
