Hello psci com

I feel as though, having lurked on this subject I must contribute,
having jumped the fence (if one exists) from the engagement to education
part of science recently (British Science Association to Association for
Science Education for those who don't know me)

Firstly, should engagement folks really want to know what goes on in
school science they could do no better than get involved with ASE - we
have many members from the informal learning world and we value their
input to our discussions.

Secondly, we, like you, are concerned about practical work in school
science. We're engaged with partners on the "Getting Practical" project
which encourages meaningful practical work in schools. We also publish
a number of books cncerned with safety in school science - always from
the point of view of what can be done rather than what can't. A basic
misunderstanding of risk assessment is often the barrier to doing
exciting (and sometimes mucky)stuff and we can help with that.

Finally, all this will become much clearer when our new website is up
and running. I will let psci com know when that is - it'll be summer
this year.

Best wishes to all

Annette

'Many people who talk about the discovery method of teaching are really
talking about arranging a lesson or an experiment so that students
discover what they are supposed to discover. That is not an exploration.
The whole tradition of exploration is being lost for entire
generations.'
