Hi Mark,

I have nothing but admiration for most GPs and I know you have a difficult time juggling workload, hours and finances. It seems to me that every time the government looks at health as a “priority” the only thing that really happens is the workload of the GP increases still further with more unrealistic so-called “targets”!

My original query related to whether there is anything we as OH professionals can do to liaise more effectively with GPs once the new Fit Notes come in? I am happy to do whatever it takes (within reason!).

Kind regards,

Rita

My practice has 7000 patients. Probably 3000 different employers. How can one practice possibly have any sort of sensible liaision with that many employers?

If there were one massive employer immedaitely adjacent to a small practice with a population that overlapped then I can see some sense in establishing some links with HR departments for mutual benefit

The realitly however is that GPs are busier now than at any time in the past and recent estimates indicate the job intensity has more than doubled in the last 10 years. I can testify to daily requests for meetings with a plethora of organisations, individuals working for PCTs, physios, outreach teams, hospices, district nurses, health visitors, patient participation groups, clinical governance teams, deanery... add to this the massive shift in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching that has taken place from secondary to primary care and then add the new contract Quality and Outcomes framework which has seen a massive expansion ( mostly good ) of formalised efficient follow up of most chronic diseases and you start to get some idea that you have to compete for our time

Each GP in my practice receives at least 50 letters a day relating to patients many of which require further actioning and about 30 blood test result, xray etc per day.. to review

We process approx 200 repeat scripts per day all of which need checking agianst the notes, ... oh and we see 600+ patients per week also - so please do not be offended if your approaches for meetings are dealt with by the round filing cabinet!

General Practice has changed massivly in the last 5 years and I'm not sure many of you realise this - in fact I think the tone of many posts and responses on this list suggest a fairly fixed sterotypical idea about a typical GP  [dons flak jacket ;) ]

This sounds familiar as I did something similar and was constantly shot down in flames, often by practice managers rather than GPs! Such a shame when you think what could potentially be achieved by closer partnership working!

Hi Rita

One of our customers is working with OH to send out letters to the local GP's stating the support which will be available short term and the duties they are required to do. They will also inform the GP that alternative/lighter duties will not be available long term. Whether this wil be successfull, or the letter thrown in the bin, we will just need to wait and see.

I have tried in the past to work with GP's and arranged for them to visist a call centre that we supported, in an attempt to show the support available and wasnt such the torture place, employees were making it out to be. However this failed, as several GP threatened to report us.

Hi,

Thank you for this, I am meeting with HR this morning and the presentation will be a massive help in getting the information across regarding the new Fit Notes. On this topic, can I ask my esteemed colleagues if anyone has liaised with GPs regarding the potential for closer working relationships between GPs and OH professionals to ensure the success of the Fit Notes? In my view this is crucial to their success. I have tried in the past to arrange meetings with local GPs with no success. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Kind regards,

Rita

Very nice and has saved me a couple of hours tonight preparing a ppt for a tutorial with our registrar!

Thanks

As a small token I have added the sample picture of the fit note to the end of your presentation

Cheers

All,

As promised, please find attached my attempt. Even managed to nick a few
choice lines from Anne-Marie's management brief (and have hopefully covered
the points mentioned earlier in Mark's mail). Please feel free to chop and
change as you see fit. Haven't got the necessary skills to add a copy of the
Statement so plan to issue a copy of the DWP guide for employers at the time
of the briefing, together with a summary of the key points.

We have a working group meeting next Friday to discuss exactly how this will
impact the business and what needs to be changed in our current
policies/procedures. Will keep you posted.

Regards,

Andy
