Sue,

what is the diagnosis/prognosis for his back and neck conditions?

Has he been mechanically and physically assessed?

I ask these questions because ultimately, if he has a significant spinal condition with associated sciatic irritation, it won’t matter what position or vehicle he is in;  he is likely to develop pain and discomfort in a fixed flexed position anyway.

So my advice would be at first to have a full Physiotherapy assessment followed up with a programme of re-stabilisation and functional restoration geared towards his work tasks. If the physiotherapist has occ health experience they can also do an ergonomic assessment of the client in the car to find the most beneficial position in terms of both the Lumbar and Cervical spine. Let me know if you want any further info on an Occupational Physiotherapist as we have a network of them across the country.

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Car Seating

Hi,

We have a gentleman who opted out the Company car scheme and bought a Land Rover Discovery.  He has a long standing back and neck problem and is finding it almost impossible to find a comfortable driving position.  If he changes the seat position  his back is better but neck and shoulders are not, and so on…..      He has spent a lot of money on back supports, seat cushions, wedges etc  but nothing helps and he continues to get sciatic pain.  He also states that the accelerator pedal is not directly in front of his right foot causing him to twist his leg and ankle.

Does anyone know of someone who can  specifically assess and make recommendations for his car seating?

Kind regards

Sue
