Has anyone else run across a story of St. Gertrude having been buried with prayer beads? Or of beads being found in her tomb? Or of beads being exhibited and said to have been hers? It would be quite an early instance of them, if so, though not impossible. But I've only heard it from a rather unreliable source which did not have a footnote for it. The earliest reasonably-reliable mention I know of is the beads of Lady Godiva, reported by William of Malmesbury, and the earlies *surviving* Christian prayer beads I know of are 12th or 13th century. ____________________________________________________________ O Chris Laning <[log in to unmask]> - Davis, California + http://paternoster-row.org - http://paternosters.blogspot.com ____________________________________________________________ ********************************************************************** To join the list, send the message: join medieval-religion YOUR NAME to: [log in to unmask] To send a message to the list, address it to: [log in to unmask] To leave the list, send the message: leave medieval-religion to: [log in to unmask] In order to report problems or to contact the list's owners, write to: [log in to unmask] For further information, visit our web site: http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/medieval-religion.html
