medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Perhaps Graham should have mentioned that the modern dedication of the
church is to St Anietus - restoring what is presumed to be the original
dedication, rather than Neot...

> Both of you are right. Modern usage has the possessive and apostrophe for the Cambridgeshire (until 1974 Huntingdonshire) parish, but not for the parish in Cornwall. This follows medieval usage: e.g. villa S. Neoti (1203), St Nyot's (1329) for 'St Neot's', and for 'St Neot' Sanctus Neotus (1201), Senniet ([ewarly 12th]14th c.), Seynt Nyet (1284), Sct Neot (1610). The Domesday entry for St Neot is misleading: '[Clerici] S' Neoti (1086). However, St Neot in Cornwall had an alternative name, Neotes- Nietestov (1086), Neotestoce ([11th]12th c), 'Neot's stow/stoc [holy place]'.

There, for example, she mentions Robert Tubb, vicar of St Neot from 1508 t0 1544 as being among the family donors, but it's not clear to me (it would be to you, I'm sure) whether this refers to the Borlase window.

I am trying to find out which of the associated donor figures were still alive when the glass was inserted (c.1500 to c.1515). Perhaps someone could put me in touch with Jo Mattingly (I used to have her email, but have temporarily mislaid it).********************************************************************** To join the list, send the message: join medieval-religion YOUR NAME to: [log in to unmask] To send a message to the list, address it to: [log in to unmask] To leave the list, send the message: leave medieval-religion to: [log in to unmask] In order to report problems or to contact the list's owners, write to: [log in to unmask] For further information, visit our web site: http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/medieval-religion.html
