Looking At Stars : the Role of Identity in the Success of ESOL Learners

Lessons For International Students?

It has long been argued that motivation, particularly a wish to identify with the target language community, plays a major role in successful language learning (Gardner and Lambert 1959; Dörnyei 2005, 2009). This seminar presents an alternative view of the role of identity in ESOL learners’ success. Data collected from ESOL learners shows that these learners are highly motivated to learn English, as is evident from high levels of investment in their learning and they have a vision of an ideal self which includes speaking English successfully. However, this vision does not include any evidence of wanting to identify with native speakers of English. The seminar will explore if this alternate view of identity has any wider implications for language teaching and any specific implications for supporting International students.
