ESRC Seminar Series “Ethical Consumption in the UK and Europe: New Developments and New Challenges for Research, Policy and Practice”

Beyond Individual Consumer Choice: Institutionalising Fair Trade and Public Procurement

19th April 2010 – Kings College London (Strand Campus)

As more and more cities and institutions are accredited Fairtrade status and some supermarkets have removed certain non-fairtrade options from the shelves: What are the consequences if ethical consumption is increasingly subject to political and administrative decisions, rather than consumer choice? What roles will different distribution networks, alternative trading organisations, governments, commercial companies and individual consumers have in the future? Does the institutionalisation of fair trade constitute a re-politicisation of fair trade?
