The National Heritage Science Strategy project's 'vision and strategy' has now been published, and will be launched at the opening of the Institute of Conservation's annual conference in Cardiff. A PDF version of the document is available on the project website www.heritagesciencestrategy.org.uk<http://www.heritagesciencestrategy.org.uk/>. Hard copies are available from the email address below.

For those who are unfamiliar with this project, it started in 2006 when the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee held an inquiry into Science and Heritage. The report from this inquiry recommended, amongst other things, that the sector come together to produce a national strategy for heritage science. In response to that suggestion, a steering group was formed from across different organisations and disciplines to develop this strategy, and a coordinator appointed to undertake and facilitate this work.

Since the project began in October 2008 three reports have been produced which provide the evidence base for the strategy. They cover the role of science in the management of the UK's heritage; the use of science to enhance our understanding of the past and capacity in the heritage science sector. These have been published on the strategy website along with the sector's responses to these reports. On the 25th November a draft strategy was presented at a stakeholder meeting held in the Tower of London. Responses from that meeting were used to refine the published vision and strategy.
The NHSS vision and strategy has two aims:

 1. to demonstrate the public benefit of heritage science and increase public engagement and support for it, and
 2. to improve partnership within the sector and with others by increasing collaboration to help practice make better use of research, knowledge and innovation and to enhance resources, funding and skills.
One of the key recommendations is the creation of a National Heritage Science Forum to assist in the implementation of these strategic objectives.

If you would like to know more about the strategy, want to know how to get involved in the future or would like a hard copy of the vision and strategy document, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Kind regards
Jim
