Nice suggestions. Two of these features already exist in the product in some form:

With "Personal Portfolios" (available since 7.2) you can comment on each individual artifact (item included in the portfolio). With Basic Portfolios only on the overall PF.

The ability to freeze a portfolio exists with an Outcomes System license, which adds the option to create "Outcomes Portfolios" (aka "Evaluation Portfolios") that can be submitted for evaluation and the included artifact versions are then frozen.

Personal Portfolios let you create content (artifacts) while creating/modifying the portfolio, whereas with Basic Portfolios you essentially have to pre-create the content you want to later link into your PF. But the added flexibility makes navigation more complex and confusing.

I would agree with previous comments that, currently, there is no single solution to meet the different needs and practices in HE.

We use Blackboard 8. The benefits of the using the basic e-portfolio are that you can create templates to structure assessments, share portfolios and they are relatively easy to use, if a little clunky. This allows our students to get on with PDP and reflection without having to spend a long time learning how to use a new piece of software.

There has been very little enhancements made to the Blackboard e-portoflio in the past few years, and it would be useful to hear what Blackboard plan to do with this tool. Are we waiting for an Angel blend?

Here are a few enhancements I would love to see:

·         RSS or email notifications when a comment has been added

·         The ability to ‘freeze’ a shared portfolio for assessment

·         Comment on individual portfolio pages

·         The UI tidied up

·         Less clicks when adding content to a page

Hope this helps

The demands from the market with respect to what they expect from a portfolio are so diverse that it's hard to make one kind of portfolio that will suit all.

Probably one of the reasons why Blackboard hardly doesn't invest anything (at least visible for clients) into portfolios.

We use the basic and personal portfolios of Blackboard next to each other.

When I should have to decide again I probably would prefer to use only the basic portfolio (even with the disadvantage of not being able to reuse portfolio items).

I had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Helen Barrett speak on ePortfoilios.  Her site is located at http://electronicportfolios.com

It does not seem that there is one "fantastic" solution out there, unfortunately.

Hi,

With regards to e-portfolios, what are people currently using for e-portfolios  and why?

We are looking into e-portfolios as part of a new offering and I would like to know what people’s views are on the current offerings, including Blackboards own. We are on Version 8 at the moment.

Thanks

Paul
