I have found this discussion strand most illuminating. Apart from one correspondent, nobody mentioned the importance of managed digital storage of sound and video recordings, something which includes migration but also things like error checking, which are essential to the long term health of these large digital files. We are fortunate to have good international guidelines, available from the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archivists at: http://www.iasa-web.org/special_publications.asp. The document you need is IASA-TC04 2nd Edition, the first publication on the list. It will open your eyes, if you have not read it, to the real needs of sound and video recordings with regards to preservation in particular. Hence my suggestion that a large organisation like the British Library might be a better place to deal with such needs in the long term.

I have successfully used Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ to transfer (a very few!) casette tapes to MP3 files. It took me a while to learn how to use it, but eventually had success.

I expect many of us have tapes from way back - we certainly do - very few transcribed and not all identified. And yes there WAY down the list of "things to do". However the technology is out there to transfer it to computers - I'll try and dig out the info unless someone else can find it quicker than me. Perhaps a job for a volunteer who is technically minded?

Dear Kath

Ours are on tape cassettes.  They certainly need converting!

However the usual cost, time and copyright barriers get in the way of doing this.  Not sure exactly how we would convert from tape either.

It's "on the list", but quite far down!

Hi
 
I've got a question for those of you who have taken in oral history archives - specifically the recordings.
 
What format are they being saved on? The Oral History Society recommends external hard drives.
 
But these will have to be replaced/data migrated from time to time.
 
Any suggestions? Thoughts?
