CRANFIELD UNIVERSITY AT THE DEFENCE ACADEMY OF THE UK Fully Funded PhD Studentship (CASE award): Quantitative Modelling of Military Tactical Decision-Making (£14,000 per annum, tax free) Applications are invited for a PhD studentship, fully funded by EPSRC and Dstl (Defence Science and Technical Laboratory, part of the MOD) for 3.5 years. This is available within Cranfield University’s Department of Engineering Systems and Management at the UK Defence Academy in Shrivenham, on the Oxfordshire/Wiltshire border. The award covers fees at the UK/EU rate plus a maintenance stipend of £14,000 per annum (normally tax free) for UK nationals or those who have been ‘ordinarily resident’ in the UK for the last three years. For EU nationals, this can include time spent in full-time education or employment in the UK. Those ‘ordinarily resident’ in other European Union countries for the last three years are eligible for the fees but not for the maintenance award. The project is concerned with quantitative modelling of military tactical decision-making. It will involve some experimental work as well as modelling using statistical and computational intelligence approaches such as classification trees, Bayesian networks, decision networks, etc. The results will help military simulations to better represent human behaviour and so achieve greater realism. The successful applicant will be expected to spend at least three months working on the project at Dstl and the additional costs involved in doing so will be reimbursed. Applicants must satisfy the above eligibility criteria and should have a good first degree or an MSc in statistics, operational research, applied mathematics, computer science or a related discipline.
