Evening event at the Natural History Museum

Thursday 25th February

7pm

Attenborough Studio

Yesterday's DNA Saving Species Today?

Can the DNA from a tiny speck of 200-year-old hair or skin reveal, or even change, the fate of an entire species?

The first Europeans to sail around the world were spellbound by the incredible diversity of life on Earth. In Victorian times, a common response to the wonder of nature was to collect specimens of every new animal and plant. Unaware of the existence of DNA, these early collectors could never have foreseen how crucial the Natural History Museum's specimens would be in the twenty-first century as a record of the planet's genetic diversity. Using new methods to extract DNA from the skin and hair of long-dead Museum specimens, past populations of animals can be compared with their living counterparts.

Museum scientists use genetic technology to explore evolution, disease and inbreeding as well as the implications for human health. Meet the experts working on the edge of scientific knowledge and find out how much hope they hold for endangered species this year, the International Year of Biodiversity 2010.

Will our growing knowledge of DNA help save frogs, Tasmanian devils and Galapagos wildlife from extinction?

Tickets £6 each. Please book online: http://www.nhmshop.co.uk/tickets/events-listing.html or phone 020 7942 5555.
