Come and celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first national Women’s 
Liberation Conference at the Free Word Centre. 


On February 27th 1970 more than 500 women met at Ruskin College in Oxford 
for the first National Women’s Liberation Movement conference. This 
extraordinary event reflected the radicalism, diversity, dissent and sisterhood 
of women at the beginning of one of the most transformative movements of 
the 20th century. 

The Way We Were and Are will explore History, Ordinary Lives, Power, and

Free Word is marking the anniversary of the Women’s Movement with two 
screenings of artists films and videos at 6.30pm on Mon 1 March and Mon 8 
March. Participating artists include Tracey Emin, Mona Hatoum, Liliane Lijn and 
Carey Young. The screenings are free and last 1 hour and there will be a panel 
discussion on 8 March, International Women’s Day, chaired by independent 
curator Gill Hedley.
