Sylvia Naish Fellowships
Endowed by a generous bequest from the estate of Sylvia Naish, three Fellowships are offered in 2010 for research into any area of German language and literature at the Institute's Germanic Studies Library. The awards are designed to assist scholars in the early stages of their careers, to provide a contribution to temporary living expenses in London, or to enable those in employment to take unpaid leave to further their studies.
1. Sylvia Naish Research Fellowship
This fellowship provides funding of up to £2,000. Open to post-doctoral applicants domiciled in one of the German-speaking countries, who wish to spend up to two months at the Institute. Applicants must have a strong publications record and should be at the beginning of their academic career. Those holding a lectureship or equivalent position at a university or similar institution of higher education will normally only be considered if they are taking unpaid leave for the duration of the Fellowship. The Fellowship may not be held concurrently with another fellowship or award.
2. Sylvia Naish Post-Doctoral Fellowship
With funding of up to £1,000, this fellowship is open to post-doctoral applicants domiciled in the UK, who wish to spend up to one month researching at the Institute.
3. Sylvia Naish Postgraduate Fellowship
With funding of up to £1,000, this fellowship is open to students in their second or third year of study for a higher degree at a University in the UK, wishing to spend up to one month conducting research at the Institute. Applicants should expect to take up the award before submitting their thesis.
What we Offer
The Institute can usually (but not always) offer office accommodation, internet/email facilities and access to the Institute's Germanic Studies Library, the Senate House Library, and libraries of other Institutes within the School of Advanced Study (e.g. the Institutes of Advanced Legal Studies, Classical Studies, Commonwealth Studies, Historical Research, the Americas, and the Warburg Institute). Admission to the British Library can be arranged as appropriate.
Fellows are encouraged to participate actively in the Institute's programme of events, and are required to present a short written report on the progress their research has made at the conclusion of their visit. Publications resulting from research carried out during the period of the Fellowship must carry due acknowledgement of the Institute and, where appropriate, a copy should be presented to the Germanic Studies Library.
Method of Application
Candidates should send their cv and covering letter, briefly outlining the research to be undertaken at the Institute and indicating when they intend taking up the award if successful, to reach Godela Weiss-Sussex at the IGRS, either by post to IGRS, University of London, Senate House, Malet Steet, London WC1E 7HU, or by email. Candidates should also arrange for two academic references to be sent direct to Godela Weiss-Sussex by the closing date; these may be sent as email attachments. Applicants will be informed of the outcome in May.
