New Directions in Turkish Film Studies Conference XI: Cinema and the New

6-8 May 2010 at Kadir Has University, Istanbul, Turkey

We are pleased to announce the eleventh annual New Directions in Turkish Film Studies Conference. One of its kind in this field, the conference has become a key fixture in Turkish academia since 1999. This initially national conference is now organized internationally and will be open to submissions from scholars worldwide this year as well. The theme of this year’s conference is “Cinema and the New,” following and developing on last year’s conference on “Cinema and Fantasy.”

There has always been new in cinema. From Italian neo-realists to Dogme movements, from coming of sound and color to IMAX-3D technologies cinematic new has always lured audiences, filmmakers and scholars to its realm of the fascinatingly novel. This year’s conference will be an attempt to tackle this vast subject matter, featuring panels on following topics:

New Media, New Cinema
The Young Turks: Manifestoes and Movements in Turkish Cinema
Old Habits Die Hard: Tradition vs Contemporary Research
New Occidentalism in Turkish Cinema
Audiences and Reception: New Ways of Seeing
Remakes: New Again
Troubled Realms: New Copyright Regulation
Back to the Future: New Methodologies
New Genres
New Production, Distribution, Exhibition
New Documentary Realism
New Ways of Organizing in Film Industry

The three-day conference consists of academic discussion sessions, panels with film industry professionals, and keynote lectures by leading international scholars and filmmakers. Previous keynote speakers include Dudley Andrew, Ella Shohat, Frank Tomasulo, John Hill, Andrew Higson, and Seth Feldman. Participants can apply for the specific panels listed above, or for the open call. Abstracts of 400-500 words, including the intended panel -or in case of open call papers, three keywords- as well as a brief bio (100-200 words) should be emailed by March 1, 2010 to Zeynep Altundag ([log in to unmask]).
